The government stipulated Law Number 16 of 1997 considering the importance of statistics for the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of various activities in many aspects of social, national and state life in the national development of the Indonesian nation.

According to Article 1 of this law, the definition of statistics is data obtained by means of collection, processing, presentation and analysis as well as a system that regulates the interrelationships between elements in the organization of statistics.

Statistical activities are actions that include efforts to provide and disseminate data, efforts to develop statistics, and efforts that lead to the development of the National Statistics System.

Based on the purpose and utilization, the types of statistics as mentioned in Article 5 consist of Basic Statistics, Sectoral Statistics, and Special Statistics.
